The calculator uses a weighted scoring system to generate a Total Habitat Value Score out of 100, based on five key factors:

  • Habitat Type: Wildflower meadows score highest (20 points), while green roofs and vegetable gardens score lower based on pollinator preference.
  • Floral Diversity: Up to 20 points, calculated as (number of native species / 50) * 20, capped at 20 points for 50+ species.
  • Habitat Connectivity: Up to 20 points, with connected corridors scoring highest and isolated habitats scoring lowest.
  • Pesticide Use: Up to 20 points, with no pesticide use scoring highest and regular synthetic use scoring lowest.
  • Nesting Sites: Up to 20 points, based on availability of bare ground, plant stems, and bee hotels.

Total score is the sum of these five factors, capped at 100. Estimated pollinator species count uses the total score as a multiplier for base species density per 1000 square meters, plus 0.2 species per native plant counted. Annual economic value estimates ecosystem services at $200 per acre for maximum score habitats, adjusted by the total score percentage.

Area inputs are converted to square meters for consistency, using standard conversion factors: 1 acre = 4046.86 square meters, 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters.
