Formula and Logic
This calculator uses simple ratio math to scale cocktail recipes to any batch size.
For preset ratios, we use standard industry proportions: Classic Sour (2 parts base spirit, 1 part citrus modifier, 1 part sweetener mixer), Dry Martini (3 parts base spirit, 1 part vermouth modifier, 0 parts mixer), Old Fashioned (2 parts base spirit, 1 part sweetener modifier, 0 parts mixer), Negroni (1 part base spirit, 1 part Campari modifier, 1 part sweet vermouth mixer).
For custom ratios, you define the parts for base, modifier, and mixer. The per-part value is calculated as (Base Spirit Amount per Serving) / (Base Ratio). All other ingredient amounts per serving are (Per-Part Value) * (Ingredient Ratio). Total batch amounts are per-serving amounts multiplied by the number of servings.
Practical Notes
For home mixologists, keep these tips in mind when using this calculator:
- Most cocktail recipes use ounces (oz) as the standard unit, but milliliters (ml) are common for metric regions. 1 oz is approximately 29.57 ml, 1 cl is 10 ml.
- When scaling batches for parties, account for 10-15% extra volume to cover spills or ice melt if serving over ice.
- Modifier ingredients like citrus juice or vermouth should be fresh for best flavor, so calculate only what you need for the event.
- If a recipe has no mixer (like a Martini), the mixer amount will show as 0, which is normal.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Home cooks and casual drinkers often struggle to scale cocktail recipes for groups, leading to unbalanced drinks or wasted ingredients. This tool eliminates guesswork by providing precise, scaled measurements for any ratio or batch size.
It saves time when prepping drinks for parties, helps you tweak existing recipes to your taste, and ensures consistent results every time you mix a drink. Whether you're hosting a dinner party or just making a drink for yourself, it takes the math out of mixology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this calculator for non-alcoholic mocktails?
Yes, the ratio logic works for any liquid ingredients. Simply input your base (like soda or juice), modifier, and mixer amounts as needed, regardless of alcohol content.
What if my recipe has more than three ingredients?
This calculator handles the three core components of most cocktails: base, modifier, and mixer. For additional ingredients (like bitters or garnishes), add their amounts manually based on the total volume calculated.
How do I convert between measurement units?
The unit selector automatically applies to all ingredient amounts. If you need to convert a result to a different unit, use standard conversion rates: 1 oz = 29.57 ml, 1 cl = 10 ml, 1 cup = 8 oz.
Additional Guidance
For best results, always measure ingredients with a jigger or digital scale for accuracy. Taste test small batches before scaling up to large groups to ensure the ratio matches your preference. Store mixed batches in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours for optimal freshness.
