Formula and Logic
Two calculation methods are used, selected by the user:
Measured Distance (Walk Test)
Stride Length = Total Distance Walked ÷ Number of Steps Taken. All distance values are first converted to meters for consistency, then output in your selected unit.
Height-Based Estimate
Estimated Stride Length = Height × Gender-Specific Factor. Factors used: 0.415 for males, 0.413 for females, 0.414 for other genders. This is a population average and may vary by individual.
Steps per kilometer/mile are calculated by dividing the distance of 1 kilometer (1000 meters) or 1 mile (1609.34 meters) by your stride length in meters.
Practical Notes
Stride length varies naturally based on walking/running speed, terrain, age, and fitness level. These calculations provide estimates, not absolute values.
Consult a healthcare provider or certified trainer before making significant changes to your fitness routine based on stride length data.
For the most accurate measured results, walk a distance of at least 100 meters/300 feet on flat, even ground, and count every step carefully.
Height-based estimates are less accurate for children, older adults, or individuals with mobility differences. Use the measured method for training or health tracking purposes.
Runners typically have longer stride lengths at higher speeds; this tool calculates walking stride length by default. For running stride, add 10-15% to the calculated value.

No. Step length is the distance from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other foot when walking. Stride length is the distance from the heel of one foot to the same heel when it touches the ground again (two steps). This tool calculates stride length.
How often should I recalculate my stride length?
Recalculate every 4-6 weeks if you’re training regularly, as fitness improvements or changes in walking/running form can alter stride length. Recalibrate after injuries or extended breaks from activity.
Can I use this tool for running stride length?
This tool calculates walking stride length by default. For running, multiply your calculated walking stride length by 1.1 to 1.15 to account for the longer stride at higher speeds.
