Formula and Logic

This calculator uses the Karvonen formula, the gold standard for calculating target heart rate zones, which accounts for your resting heart rate to provide more accurate results than basic max heart rate calculations.

Step 1: Calculate Max Heart Rate (HRmax) using your selected formula:

  • Standard: HRmax = 220 - Age
  • Tanaka: HRmax = 208 - (0.7 × Age)
  • Gellish: HRmax = 206.9 - (0.67 × Age)

Step 2: Calculate Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) = HRmax - Resting Heart Rate (RHR)

Step 3: Calculate each zone using the formula: Target HR = (HRR × Intensity Percentage) + RHR
